Things to Know Before Your Stockport Move

Old Town locks down at 10:30am so finish heavy items by 10:15a

Little Underbank, Great Underbank and the Market Place flip to pedestrian priority at 10:30am daily, and from 7am on Fridays and Saturdays. After that, bollards rise and you're walking items from outside the zone. If your flat sits off the Market Place or the Underbanks, book the first slot of the day and finish heavy pieces before 10:15am to beat the closure.

Avoid Heaton Lane bus gate or you'll get a £60 PCN

The camera at Heaton Lane sits by the new Interchange and catches drivers constantly. Navigation apps try to send vans through, but only buses, cycles and Hackney carriages can pass. Share a pinned approach that avoids Heaton Lane completely, and if you need the M60, use the signed Travis Brow to A6 link instead. Tell anyone following in a car to do the same.

Merseyway and Redrock cap at 1.85 m so use surface car parks

Both multi-storeys max out at 1.85 m, which rules out most removal vans. They also shut exit gates at 1:30am Sunday to Thursday and 2:30am Friday to Saturday. Tell your movers to use Bulkeley Street (around 2.2 m) or Caroline Street instead. Share the exact entrance and exit so they don't get forced into a loop of the A6.

Greek Street roundabout is closed until Spring 2026

The roundabout shut on 31 March 2025 for bridge works, with diversions running towards Mercian Way and the A6. If you're moving in Edgeley, Shaw Heath or near the station, give your van extra time and agree the exact diversion you want them to use. A dropped pin and a street photo help them pick the right turn first time.

Stockport County matchdays close roads 60 minutes before kick-off

On home games, Hardcastle Road, Caroline Street and streets around Edgeley Park close up to an hour before kick-off and 45 minutes after full time. If your completion date collides with a fixture, start early and approach from the far side of the stadium. Have Caroline Street or Bulkeley Street as a backup meet point if kerb space disappears.

Apply for dispensations if pavement space is tight

The town-centre CPZ runs Monday to Saturday, 6am to 6pm, and wardens check. Ask our removal companies to request a dispensation or bay suspension for your move, and set up visitor permits for any following cars. It's cheaper than a £70 fine and stops the van circling while you're halfway through a carry.

FAQs About Movers in Stockport

What is the average removal cost in Stockport?

The average removal cost in Stockport is around £532 for a 1 to 2-bedroom move, £1,385 for a 3-bedroom home and £2,535 for a 4-bedroom property. Costs can rise if your move is in the Old Town, where pedestrian restrictions can mean longer carries after 10:30am, or if the van cannot use nearby multi-storey parking and has to load from a surface car park instead.

How do I get accurate removal quotes?

To get an accurate quote, share the exact entrance, best approach and any local restrictions before the company prices the job. In Stockport, that is especially helpful if you are near the Interchange or station, where the Heaton Lane bus gate and the Greek Street diversion can affect the route, or if your flat is in the Old Town and access changes later in the morning.

How do I choose a removal company?

Choose a removal company that asks practical questions about timing, route planning and stopping points rather than just the size of the move. In Stockport, a good company should understand that areas near Edgeley Park can be affected by matchday closures and that central jobs often need a planned surface parking option because Merseyway and Redrock are too low for most removal vans.

How far in advance should I book movers?

It is best to book movers as early as you can, especially if you need the first slot of the day. In Stockport, that matters for Old Town addresses where access tightens after 10:30am, and it also gives you more flexibility if your move could be affected by a Stockport County fixture or by extra journey time around the Greek Street works.

What should I tell movers about parking or access before moving day?

Tell movers where they can legally stop, whether the job depends on a permit or suspension, and which entrance they should use. That is particularly important in Stockport town centre, where the CPZ is actively enforced, nearby multi-storeys are too low for many vans, and a poor approach can leave the driver stuck circling instead of unloading.
