Things to Know Before Your Luton Move
Luton’s central shopping streets are now camera-enforced and one-way. Since the 2024 layout change, George Street and Manchester Street are closed to traffic for most of the day. Vans entering without written approval are fined automatically. If you’re moving into a flat above a shop, choose an early morning slot before 9 am or an evening slot after 6 pm. If that’s not possible, book parking just outside the zone so your movers can unload safely without risking a ticket. The Library car park suits smaller vans, but check the 2.08-metre height limit before you confirm.
Airport Way and Kimpton Road are no-stopping zones with 24-hour cameras. You can’t even pause to unload, and fines arrive within days. If your new home sits near either road, ask the council for permission to park on nearby side streets or use marked loading bays. Check the red-route map before booking your date. In our experience, these fines catch people who assume hazard lights are enough.
The guided Busway between Dunstable and Luton looks like a normal road but isn’t open to cars or vans. It has deep wheel tracks, car traps and 24-hour CCTV. Sat navs still list it as a shortcut, and several moving vans have been damaged after following it by mistake. When confirming your movers’ route or sending your address, make sure directions avoid the Busway and the White Lion Retail spur. The A505 or Hatters Way are the safe alternatives.
Most central car parks in Luton are too low for moving vans. The Mall Market car park stops at 1.88 metres, and the Library car park at roughly 2.08 metres. Once the van enters, there’s no way to turn back. Before you confirm your slot, ask which vehicle your movers are using and choose a surface car park or kerbside space on the edge of the centre. Picking the wrong spot can waste an hour and delay your completion handover.
High Town’s parking fills up fast after several car parks closed. If you’re moving there, secure a space outside your home the night before with cones or by asking neighbours to leave room for the van. In Bury Park, avoid Luton Town home matches entirely. Roads near Kenilworth Road close 90 minutes before kick-off and again at full time, and even residents get turned away. Check the fixture list and pick another date, or finish before 1 pm on match Saturdays.
The Luton International Carnival shuts Park Street, Silver Street and much of the town centre from early morning into the evening. Access is impossible, even for residents. If your completion date lands on that weekend, move it. The same goes for big parades and festivals. Check the council’s event calendar before confirming dates, as once barriers go up, removals stop for the day.
