Things to Know Before Your Bromley Move
The retractable bollard by Elmfield Road locks the pedestrian zone from 09:00 to 17:00, and market days (Thursday to Saturday) can keep it closed even longer. If you show up mid-morning you’ll be trapped outside the barriers, wasting your move window. Apply for a Vehicle Access Permit at least two working days ahead, then schedule your unload before 9 or after 5. If you miss that slot, park on Elmfield Road or Kentish Way and walk items in. Our removal companies do this regularly and bring trolleys and protection for the carry.
Those quiet side streets look free, but they sit inside a Restricted Parking Zone. No yellow lines doesn’t mean no rules. Waiting and loading are banned unless you’re in a marked bay, often 24 hours a day. Stop there for “five minutes” and you’ll find a PCN on the windscreen. Before move day, check for RPZ entry signs. If there’s no legal bay, book a suspension early. Our movers will park directly to the suspension board and keep the load continuous so you stay compliant.
Kerb space outside Bromley’s terraces and flats is limited and wardens patrol constantly. You need an official suspension or dispensation arranged through the council, not an optimistic hazard light. A suspension costs £40 per bay per day + £30 admin, and a single-yellow dispensation covers loads longer than 40 minutes. If you skip this, you’ll end up circling while your movers wait. Count the van length, apply for enough bays and print the approval for the dashboard.
The Glades multi-storey caps vehicles at 2.0 metres and locks overnight. A Luton van won’t clear the barrier, and a late finish could trap it inside. If you need an open-air option, pick a council surface car park. The council can temporarily remove a height barrier for £150 standard or £198 urgent with a few days’ notice. Tell your movers the van height before you book so they can choose a ground-level site and walk the kit in quickly.
Bromley closes some roads near schools during drop-off and pick-up, including George Lane by Hayes Primary (08:15–09:15 and 14:45–15:45, term time). Wardens enforce from the exact minute. The Charter Market fills the High Street Thursday to Saturday, cutting access even outside the usual hours. Plan moves for early morning or evening, or stage on the next street and shuttle items with sack trucks until roads reopen.
Flats above shops on the High Street have narrow dog-leg stairs and first-floor lounges. Conversions in Shortlands and Bickley often split landings halfway up. A large sofa or wardrobe can wedge on the turn and stall the crew. Measure the narrowest doorway and stair corner, remove sofa legs and doors in advance and flag any obstacles when booking. Our movers dismantle, protect and reassemble, but they need those details before they arrive.
